01 · The Reaction

Not dislike. Not confusion. Indifference.

Some collections tell you immediately why you do not like them. The proportion bothers you. The styling overwhelms the garment. The concept feels unresolved. The reference feels too literal. You may strongly disagree with almost every decision, but at least the collection gives you something specific to disagree with.

Labrum London Spring 2027 creates a more difficult critical response. Looking through the collection, the first instinct is to search for the problem. Is it too simple? Is the tailoring weak? Is there not enough happening? Is the styling responsible? But those explanations do not quite describe the reaction.

The more precise response is almost stranger: very little happens emotionally. The collection does not provoke strong dislike, but neither does it create much desire, curiosity or urgency. Instead of wanting to argue with it, I find myself repeatedly asking why I am not responding to it at all.

The Central Question
What happens when a collection gives you plenty to understand, but very little to feel?

02 · Three Different Reactions

“I don't like it” can mean very different things.

Fashion criticism becomes much more useful when we stop treating every negative response as the same response. There is a substantial difference between hating something, failing to understand it and simply feeling indifferent toward it.

Hatred can actually indicate enormous engagement. A silhouette can irritate you enough that you mentally redesign it. A styling decision can seem so wrong that you keep returning to the image. Even a collection you consider unsuccessful can remain memorable because the failure itself is interesting.

Confusion is different again. Confusion can create curiosity. You may not initially understand what the designer is proposing, but the uncertainty makes you investigate. You want the show notes. You want to inspect the garment more closely. You want to know why something was done.

Indifference contains neither of those energies. You understand enough to continue looking, but the clothes do not create a strong need to move toward or away from them.

The Distinction

Indifference is not the same as dislike.

03 · Simplicity Is Not The Problem

Quiet clothes still have to make decisions.

It would be easy to explain this reaction by saying that the collection is simply too simple. That would also be a weak conclusion. Fashion does not need decoration, spectacle or complicated construction in order to become compelling. Some of the strongest collections we have studied this season have been built from extremely familiar clothes.

Calvin Klein showed us that “enough” can itself become a discipline. Kallmeyer demonstrated how restraint can create authority without severity. LII showed how one small interruption can make minimal clothing extraordinarily precise. Rachel Comey demonstrated that everyday clothing can become compelling through the specificity of the person implied by it.

Simplicity therefore cannot be the explanation. If anything, simplicity increases the pressure on individual decisions. When there are fewer decorative events, the cut of a coat matters more. The break of a trouser matters more. The relationship between a shirt and the body matters more. Color, fabrication and proportion become easier to inspect because there is less information competing with them.

Fashion Index Principle

Simplicity does not remove the need for a point of view. It exposes it.

04 · The Second Look Test

What makes your eye return?

One of the simplest ways to test engagement is to stop asking whether a garment is good and instead ask what makes us look at it twice. The answer does not have to be beauty. In fact, it does not even have to be positive.

A strange proportion can make us return. So can extraordinary elegance, an uncomfortable silhouette, an unexpected color relationship, a fabric we want to touch, an awkward styling decision or a construction detail we cannot immediately understand. The common factor is attention.

The Second Look Test

Look at the garment once.

Move forward.

Then ask: what made me want to go back?

Not what makes the garment technically respectable. Not what the show notes tell us it means. What did the clothes themselves do that made the eye return?

A collection does not need to pass this test with every look. Repetition, quieter transitions and supporting garments are part of building a wardrobe. But if the answer repeatedly becomes “nothing,” the cumulative emotional flatness becomes worth examining.

05 · Research & Response

Meaning cannot demand emotion.

Understanding is not the same as engagement.

The difficulty becomes greater once the collection's background is understood, because Spring 2027 is not empty of meaning. It forms the final chapter in Foday Dumbuya's extended investigation of cultural osmosis: the movement, exchange and cross-pollination of culture. Here the conversation expands through craft, tailoring, textiles and the knowledge that can travel through making.

There is personal history in the work. There are textile and embroidery ideas connected to family memory, alongside the continuing relationship between British tailoring and West African cultural language. Those references matter because they explain why certain materials, techniques and motifs exist.

But this is precisely where fashion criticism has to maintain a separation between respecting the subject and evaluating the design. Learning that a garment contains a meaningful reference can deepen our understanding of it. It cannot require us to become emotionally moved by the result.

The Distinction
Meaning can explain a garment. It cannot require an emotional response from the viewer.

This is not a dismissal of research. It is actually a higher standard for it. The question is what happens after the meaning enters the design process. Does it alter proportion? Does it generate a textile? Does it produce an unusual relationship between garments? Does it create something the eye experiences before the explanation arrives?

06 · Beyond Ahluwalia

What if the research is visible—and you still do not care enough?

Earlier in London, Ahluwalia gave us a useful distinction: research gives the designer reasons; design gives the viewer evidence. There, the question was whether a rich research proposition had been translated clearly enough into a coherent runway language.

Labrum advances that question because evidence is not entirely absent. We can see craft. We can see textile development. We can see tailoring. We can understand the meeting of sartorial traditions. The clothes are not devoid of the ideas behind them.

Yet evidence alone does not necessarily create desire. That introduces another stage between understanding a collection and becoming invested in it.

The Next Question

Research can become design and the design can still fail to create enough tension to make us care.

That is not the same as saying every garment needs spectacle. The missing tension could be extremely subtle: a proportion pushed slightly further, a stronger contrast between categories, a more distinctive silhouette, a textile used in a less expected way, or a styling relationship that makes familiar clothes newly specific.

07 · Good Is Not Compelling

A collection can satisfy many criteria and still leave the viewer outside.

This may be the most useful lesson in the entire collection. Fashion criticism often becomes a checklist. Is it well made? Is the research substantial? Is it wearable? Does it make sense for the brand? Is the designer consistent? Are there technically good clothes?

Labrum can answer many of those questions positively without resolving the emotional response. That exposes the limitation of judging fashion exclusively through criteria.

A garment can be well made, well researched, culturally meaningful, wearable, competently proportioned, consistent with a brand and commercially sensible while still failing to become compelling. None of those positive qualities is fake simply because the emotional result remains muted. They are simply measuring something different.

Fashion Index Principle

Good and compelling are not synonyms.

The distinction matters because it allows criticism to become more accurate. We do not need to invent technical failures in order to justify a lack of enthusiasm. Sometimes the absence of engagement is itself the thing that needs explaining.

08 · Desire

Where is the pull?

Desire in fashion is broader than wanting to buy something. A garment can create desire even when you would never wear it. You can want to touch it, understand it, photograph it, examine its construction or simply see it again.

That is why commercial wearability cannot substitute for desire. A perfectly useful jacket may be a good product while producing little runway tension. Equally, an impossible dress may create enormous fashion desire without functioning as a realistic purchase for most viewers.

Labrum's challenge here is not that the clothes need to become more theatrical. That would be a superficial solution. The challenge is to create more specific reasons for the eye to remain with them.

The Desire Question
What makes me move closer to this garment?

If the answer is primarily the story that accompanies it, the clothing may be relying too heavily on explanation. If the garment creates the question before we know the answer, the design has already begun doing more of the work.

09 · Continuity vs Momentum

Knowing the language is not the same as moving it forward.

There is no requirement for a designer to reinvent an entire identity every six months. In fact, demanding constant reinvention often prevents a house from developing the repetition necessary to establish real codes. Continuity matters.

But continuity and momentum are different things. Continuity allows us to recognize where the designer has been. Momentum gives us a reason to wonder where the designer is going.

Spring 2027 feels closer to the first condition. The house language remains credible. The collection contains the tailoring, craft, cultural exchange and textile intelligence that make sense within Labrum. What is harder to locate is the new tension that makes this particular chapter feel urgent rather than simply coherent.

The Distinction

Continuity preserves a language. Momentum makes us want to follow it.

10 · The Trilogy Test

If this is Chapter Three, what could not have existed in Chapter One?

Spring 2027 has additional pressure because it concludes a three-season exploration of osmosis. A conclusion does not need to become bigger, louder or more theatrical. But a multi-season investigation should create some sense that the designer has travelled.

That journey can be technical. It can be conceptual. It can change silhouette, material, styling, casting or the relationship between familiar codes. What matters is that Chapter Three contains evidence of what Chapters One and Two made possible.

The Trilogy Test

If this is Chapter Three, what could not have existed in Chapter One?

What has the investigation taught the designer?

Which garment, proportion, textile or construction decision exists because the previous chapters happened?

If most of the clothing could move backward through the trilogy without substantially changing its meaning, then the conceptual narrative may have progressed more clearly than the design language itself.

11 · Equilibrium

Can stillness be the idea without making the viewer feel still?

There is a generous way to interpret the subdued quality of the collection. If osmosis describes movement, exchange and gradual transformation, then perhaps equilibrium is a logical destination. After several seasons of cultural movement, the final chapter does not necessarily need another dramatic collision. It can settle.

Conceptually, that makes sense. Critically, however, intention cannot become immunity. Saying that a collection is supposed to feel quiet does not automatically transform emotional flatness into success.

Quiet fashion can be enormously affecting. Stillness can create tension. Equilibrium can feel precise, elegant, intimate or even strange. The absence of obvious conflict does not require the absence of emotional energy.

The Equilibrium Test
Can the clothes become quieter without the viewer becoming less curious?

That is where Spring 2027 remains unresolved for me. I can understand why the collection may want to settle. I am less convinced that the settling itself produces enough new fashion information.

12 · The Memory Test

Close the collection.

Runway impact is not only what happens while an image is directly in front of us. Memory is another useful measure. After forty looks, what remains once the screen is closed?

This test is deliberately different from asking whether we remember the collection's concept. A strong show can communicate its theme very clearly while leaving surprisingly few garments in the mind. Fashion ultimately has to operate through clothes, even when those clothes carry substantial cultural, historical or personal meaning.

The Memory Test

Close the collection.

Wait ten minutes.

Which garments can you reconstruct in your head?

Not the theme. Not the show notes. Not the designer's biography. Which silhouette, coat, trouser, textile or styling decision remains visually specific?

Memorability is not a requirement for every individual look, and theatricality is not the only route to memory. A perfectly simple black coat can remain unforgettable if its line is specific enough. The question is whether enough of the clothing leaves a visual residue.

The Risk

A collection can communicate its message more memorably than it communicates its garments.

13 · What Should Change?

Not louder. More specific.

The wrong conclusion would be that Labrum needs more decoration, more spectacle, stranger silhouettes or a louder runway. None of those things automatically creates engagement, and imposing them would risk destroying the qualities the house already possesses.

The more interesting challenge is specificity. Where can an already credible language become harder to mistake for anything else? Where can tailoring move one step further? Where can cultural exchange affect construction rather than only textile or motif? Where can a familiar garment acquire one decision that makes it unmistakably Labrum?

The house already has subject matter. It already has craft. It already has a reason for existing. The next stage is not necessarily adding more. It is creating stronger tension inside what is already there.

Direction
Do not become louder simply to command attention. Become more specific so attention has somewhere to stay.

14 · The Collection Test

What did Labrum London Spring 2027 teach us?

First, a negative response does not always contain an obvious design failure. Criticism becomes more accurate when we resist the temptation to invent one. Sometimes the problem is not that a garment is badly cut, poorly researched or incoherent. Sometimes the collection simply fails to create enough pull.

Second, simplicity is not an excuse for emotional flatness. Quiet clothing can contain enormous specificity, and familiar garments can become unforgettable through proportion, material, attitude and construction. The quieter the language becomes, the more clearly we can see whether those decisions are present.

Third, meaning and design must be respected separately. The cultural and personal significance of a reference deserves serious attention, but the importance of the subject does not automatically determine the power of the resulting garment.

Fourth, continuity and momentum are not interchangeable. A designer can preserve an established language successfully while still leaving us uncertain about what has advanced. A multi-season investigation becomes especially interesting when each chapter visibly changes what the designer is capable of doing.

Finally, fashion does not have to make us happy in order to succeed. It can disturb us, confuse us, irritate us, seduce us or challenge our taste. But it needs to create some form of relationship. Indifference becomes significant precisely because the relationship never fully begins.

The Verdict

The problem of indifference.

Labrum London Spring 2027 is difficult to criticize because its weakness is not an obvious failure. The tailoring is credible. The textiles contain real craft. The cultural research is substantial rather than superficial, and personal history gives parts of the collection genuine meaning. There are individual garments to admire. Yet admiration and engagement are not the same response.

What I struggle to find is the pull. There is little here that makes me angry, but also too little that makes me curious. I understand increasingly more about the collection the longer I investigate it, but understanding it does not substantially change my emotional response to seeing it. That distinction matters. Explanation can reveal meaning the eye initially missed; it cannot obligate the viewer to become moved by it.

Nor do I think simplicity itself is responsible. Some of fashion's most compelling garments are almost aggressively simple. When decoration and spectacle disappear, however, the remaining decisions have to become even more specific. A proportion, textile, line or relationship between pieces has to create the tension that embellishment might otherwise provide.

There may be conceptual logic in the quietness. As the concluding chapter of an extended exploration of osmosis, equilibrium is a plausible destination. But stillness as a concept does not require stillness in the viewer. Quiet fashion can produce enormous desire.

The challenge for Labrum is therefore not to become louder, stranger or more decorative. It is to locate the next tension inside an already credible language. Spring 2027 demonstrates that the house knows what it stands for. The next step is making us urgently curious about what it can do with that knowledge.

The opposite of a great collection is not always a bad collection. Sometimes it is one that gives you no reason to keep thinking about it.
