A €3,000 budget does not automatically mean the correct answer is a €3,000 coat. You may find that the COS silhouette is exactly what your wardrobe needs. Few houses are as closely associated with the coat itself. Max Mara's outerwear language includes wool, cashmere, camel hair and double-faced constructions, with established coat families such as the 101801, Manuela and Teddy Bear.

Someone ready to make a serious outerwear investment and whose priority is fabric, drape and long-term wardrobe usefulness rather than novelty.
What GTWJ would look for

03 • The Fun Coat
Charlotte Simone
For fur trims, playful faux fur and outerwear that does not take itself too seriously.
Why GTWJ chose it
Not every coat needs to be a sober lifetime investment. Charlotte Simone specializes in limited-edition playful faux-fur outerwear and accessories, making it particularly interesting if your everyday wardrobe is simple and you want the coat itself to create the personality.
What to look for
Fur-trimmed coats, shorter statement jackets and animal-print outerwear. If the print or trim is already doing a lot, GTWJ would keep the clothing underneath relatively uncomplicated and let the outerwear be the point.

04 • Accessible Architecture

For strong proportions without designer-level pricing.
Why GTWJ chose it
COS is one of the places we would check when shape matters. Its current wool-coat offering includes belted, single-breasted, oversized and cocooning silhouettes alongside cropped transitional jackets.

Do not buy from the photograph alone. Two coats can look almost identical online while having very different fiber compositions. Open the material information before deciding whether the price makes sense.
Best for
Someone who wants modern minimalism, architectural proportion or an oversized silhouette while keeping the budget more accessible.

Burc Akyol's outerwear includes wool-loden coats and the Fall/Winter 2026 runway incorporated substantial fur and double-breasted wool outerwear. This is not the destination for the reader who wants the safest possible coat. It is for someone who wants fashion direction within a tailored wardrobe.
What to look for
Long wool tailoring, sharply structured lines and pieces that feel considered even when worn over extremely simple clothes.

Our Fall 2026 focus

Best for the reader who says, “I don't need another sensible coat.”
08 • The More Accessible Edit
Mango
Because useful fashion advice needs to acknowledge different budgets.
Why GTWJ included it
Not everyone shopping for a coat has a four-figure budget, and that should not exclude them from having a useful fashion guide. Mango currently carries handmade wool-mix coats and Manteco-wool options alongside more trend-led outerwear.
What to look for
Simple long coats, belted wool silhouettes and cleaner pieces where the construction does not depend on excessive decoration.

The Row
When fabric, cut and proportion are the decoration.
What to expect
The Row's current outerwear ranges from double-felted wool overcoats to suede and calfskin coats, with shawl, cocoon and car-coat shapes forming part of the wider language.
Who this is for
Someone for whom budget is secondary to construction and who genuinely wants minimalist outerwear—not someone buying minimalism because she has been told it is the sophisticated choice.
Exceptional for studying what proportion and fabrication alone can do. But expensive minimalism is only worthwhile if minimalism is actually your style.
11 • The Scarf Coat
Rue Sophie
If an integrated scarf is specifically what you're searching for.
Why GTWJ chose it
Rather than telling you that scarf coats are popular and leaving you to search endlessly, this is a brand with scarf construction built directly into its outerwear identity.
Pieces to know
The Greta Scarf Coat uses a 100% wool main fabric. The Milagros version combines 80% wool, 10% silk and 10% cashmere. Rue Sophie also offers a cotton Meline scarf jacket for lighter transitional weather.
Who should buy this
Someone who likes the scarf-coat look enough to want it built into the garment rather than recreated with a separate accessory.

Ralph Lauren
For the coat that feels as though it already has a history.
Why GTWJ chose it
Ralph Lauren is particularly strong when you want menswear-influenced tailoring, traditional wool coats, herringbone, equestrian references and outerwear that doesn't need to look aggressively attached to Fall 2026.
Current details worth noticing
The brand currently offers double-faced Italian wool, structured double-breasted coats and tailored wool-and-cashmere outerwear.
Go here if...
You want heritage rather than minimalism, especially if your autumn wardrobe already contains knitwear, denim, boots, loafers and classic trousers.
A particularly good direction if “timeless” to you means character and tradition rather than blank neutrality.
13 • Scandinavian Modern
Toteme
Clean, recognizable, oversized and particularly strong for scarf outerwear.
What to know
Toteme's scarf jackets and coats remain signature pieces. Current examples use structured wool blends with oversized shoulders and attached scarves; one current scarf coat uses a blend of RWS wool, recycled wool and recycled polyester.
Best for
Someone whose wardrobe already leans Scandinavian, minimal and oversized and who wants the coat to remain visually interesting without becoming loud.

How to Read a Coat Label
Virgin Wool
Wool fibers being used for the first time rather than recycled wool. Look beyond the phrase and still consider weight, hand-feel and construction.
Cashmere Blend
Cashmere can add softness and luxury, but “contains cashmere” tells you little without the percentage. Read the full composition.
Wool Blend
Not automatically good or bad. A blend can improve durability, structure or price. The question is what fibers are being blended and what you are paying for them.
Faux Fur
A synthetic composition is expected here. Evaluate density, softness, lining, recovery and how convincing the pile looks rather than applying wool-coat standards to a completely different material.
Double-Faced
Two layers of fabric are worked together to create a clean finish that can allow a coat to remain unlined and beautifully soft.
Lining
Look inside. A beautifully designed exterior with a poor interior can change how the coat moves, breathes and wears over knitwear.
The Fitting Room Test
Before You Buy the Coat
01. Wear the type of knit you will genuinely layer underneath it.
02. Look at the shoulder. Is the drop intentional or simply too large?
03. Button the coat completely.
04. Open it completely. You will probably wear it this way often.
05. Raise your arms and sit down.
06. Put your normal handbag on your shoulder.
07. Look at the coat from the back.
08. Check where the hem falls against the trousers, skirts and dresses you actually wear.
09. If the collar is the selling point, test every way you intend to wear it.
10. Ask what job this coat is doing in your wardrobe.
Shopping Online?
Compare the garment measurements with a coat you already own rather than relying entirely on XS, S or M.
Check model height, coat length, shoulder placement and whether the silhouette is intentionally oversized.
Read the complete fiber composition and care instructions before ordering.
Confirm return conditions before purchasing a high-value item, particularly from an unfamiliar international brand.
And remember: a coat photographed with perfect styling can look very different when separated from the scarf, sunglasses, boots and model. Look at the garment itself.
